Treatment
What Treatment is Involved in Paediatric Physiotherapy?
Firstly you will be offered a preliminary assessment in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
At this session there will be a physical observation and assessment of your child's abilities. It is important that this is an enjoyable and positive experience so it involves a lot of games and aims to be fun for all involved.
We will not only be looking at what the child can and cannot do, but how they do it, the quality and ease of movement and their willingness to attempt activities.
Parents and family are an important and integral part of the process. In order to make therapy a success the whole family is encouraged to be involved. As well as working with your child we will discuss any concerns you may have and encourage questions regarding your child's abilities and treatment.
Once the main problems are identified we will discuss how we can help and what we can offer, how often treatment needs to be, the progress we would expect to make and other relevant issues.
This is the point at which we will work in partnership with you to facilitate the physiotherapy input and support.
Treatment will include...
- exercises
- games
- education of postures and movement
- mobilisation and stretching
- activities to carry out at home
...as children learn through play and movement and exploration of their environment.
Short and long term goals will be set that are realistic for everyone and these will be reviewed on a regular basis.
Paediatric physiotherapists aim to integrate therapy into everyday life and can offer advice on toys, equipment, school and play activities. Treatment can be offered in homes, nurseries, and schools. We've even been known to visit the local playbarn!
